Johanna Levy, VP of Business Development and Head of Sustainability, has led the Institute’s sustainability efforts since 2021. In this role, Levy drives initiatives that integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of GIA’s operations. Her role involves identifying opportunities for reducing environmental impact, enhancing corporate social responsibility, and fostering sustainable growth. Levy’s leadership in business development focuses on expanding GIA’s reach and impact in the gemological world through strategic partnerships and innovative projects. With a background in environmental science and a passion for ethical practices, Levy is committed to advancing GIA’s mission of ensuring public trust in gems and jewelry. Johanna holds a Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies and Concentration in Environmental Sciences from Harvard University and a Master of Science in Sustainability Management from Columbia University.

This session will focus on key sustainability challenges in the gem and jewelry industry, and cover upcoming European legislation, alongside the increasing demand for transparency, ethical sourcing, and sustainable materials from consumers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z. We will outline concrete actions, including developing a materiality analysis, implementing robust traceability systems, and reducing environmental impact to not only ensure compliance but also unlock competitive advantages, attract conscious consumers, and foster long-term resilience.
