Dr. Dietmar Schwarz got his PhD in Natural Sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz/Germany.
After his studies he became Scientific Lecturer for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and was sent to the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto in Brazil where he worked as Professor teaching Mineralogy and Gemology for more than seven years. During this time he performed a series of research projects on colored gemstones that were mainly sponsored by the German Research Association (DFG) (especially on emeralds).
From 1992 until 2013 Dr. Schwarz was Research Manager at the renowned Gubelin Gem Lab in Lucerne/Switzerland. From 2014 to 2016 he was Director at AIGS Lab in Bangkok and since 2017 he is Manager of Research and Development at the FIG Lab, Bangkok.
Since 2010 he is Guest Lecturer at the China University of Geosciences (CUGB) in Beijing-Wuhan/China and since 2014 Professor of Gemology at the Tongji University in Shanghai/China.
Dr. Schwarz is author of numerous articles published in the most important gemological magazines/journals (‘Journal of Gemmology’; ‘Gems & Gemology’; ‘Australian Gemmologist’; ‘Zeitschrift Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft’). He participated in numerous international conferences (e.g. member of IGC), scientific meetings and committees and he organised numerous gemological courses/seminars/work-shops in many countries around the world.
Dr. Schwarz is author of the book “Esmeraldas” (UFOP 1987) and an author of the book "Geographic Origin Determination of Coloured Gemstones" (NGTC 2012).
